Gratitude attitude – while this could be a great slogan for a bumper sticker what could a truly conscious shift to a gratitude attitude do to help us to feel more happiness, confidence and freedom in our lives?  And less anxious and self-doubting?

From my perspective ALOT. How do I know this? I’ve experienced it myself, I’ve seen it shift others and the science tells us this too. A Harvard Medical School article states: “In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.”

But what I’m talking about here is something much deeper than positive thinking, affirmations or the idea of “faking it til you make it”.

Gratitude Attitude – One of the Master Frequencies to Finding More Freedom

A gratitude attitude is one of the master frequencies I believe are essential to helping us find more worthiness, happiness, fun, and freedom in our lives. When we consciously shift to this frequency of gratitude our lives can truly change for the better.

A big call I know – but my experience is that it’s true. And it’s actually a very easy thing to do once we become attuned to it.

How to Create a Gratitude Attitude?

Gratitude is essentially about feeling grateful for what we have right now rather than wishing things were better or different to how they are. It’s also about finding something to be grateful for even in a difficult time.

What’s most interesting is that a lack of a gratitude attitude can come from feeling we are not good enough or that we don’t have enough. Back in Episode 2 I spoke about this in detail.

To recap quickly – how many times a day or week do you say to yourself: “I don’t have enough money to do that”, “I don’t have enough time to do that.” or “I’ll do that fun thing later and never get back to it.”

We Need To Get Things Into Perspective

The fascinating thing is that when we look at the big picture of our lives and society we actually have alot.

We are one of the richest civilisations ever to have walked this planet.  Most of us in the west have access to food, shelter, heating, clothing. We educate our kids and, in non-COVID-19 times, we can go where we want, catch up with family and friends, and travel.

We are living the lives of kings and queens of centuries gone by BUT WE DON’T SEE THIS.

Many of us seem to focus on the opposite. We think we never have enough time, money, health, relationships and that we must strive and struggle to keep what we have and to be safe and secure in the future.

You might have heard me talk about a 21st century upgrade to the way we use our mind – this is what I’m talking about!

It is a conscious shift to the way we choose to approach our lives in every single moment.

And having a gratitude attitude is a major part of this.

Neuroscience tells us our brains are wired to look at the negative – and if we understand that from a quantum perspective that the observer affects the observed – it means we’ve got to be really, really careful about what we focus on.  We really do reap what we sow.

STACK OF HAY

Gratitude Attitude Is a Master Frequency

That’s why having a gratitude attitude is so vital and why it is one of the Master Frequencies I teach in my Freedom Unlimited program. When we see the truth of what we have – the abundance of what we have right now then everything can change.  Remember those kings and queens I was talking about? We are those people. We have so, so, so much right now.

What do we have right now that we can be grateful for?

There is so much when we start looking – and we don’t have to look far. The air we have to breathe, the water we have to drink, the device you’re using to read this blog.

There are also much larger things we can be grateful for – that don’t involve money. For me I’m incredibly grateful for my dear friend Lynne. She is like a second mother to me and she came into my life when I really needed the support of a gorgeous soul like her. My own beautiful mother had been unwell for many years with dementia and she transitioned in 2019.  There were alot of years that I missed her deeply and I feel so grateful that Lynne and I found each other and have become such dear and close friends.

As I said earlier the science is also very clear on this. That same article from Harvard Medical School says: “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

So how do we create a gratitude attitude?

Let Go of Old Stories That Don’t Serve Us

We tell ourselves thousands of stories every day about ourselves and our lives. Alot of these are not good stories. They can be self-critical, judging and negative. And alot of them can be about what we do not have.

Nelson Mandela is one of my heros. When he left prison, after 27 years of incarceration, he said:

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

Here is someone who chose to tell a new story about his experience in prison.

So here is the opportunity we have. Thinking of the stories we tell ourselves – what if we turned each story around? What if we choose to tell a story that supports ourselves and our lives rather than detracts from who we are? I talk more about this in Episode 12.

Remember Gratitude Is For the Hard Times and The Good

Gratitude is like a currency. It has an incredible power to it. It is a wonderful frequency to experience and it is something that lights the way. It helps to amplify and remember what is good and what we want to remember in the moment.

It is not just something that we focus on when times are good.  It can light up the darkest moment and the most difficult situation.

I consider gratitude a master frequency because it is something you can call upon in difficult times. It helps to soothe you and it helps you come to a place where more options are open to you. Where inspiration may come to you.

Calling on the frequency of gratitude in difficult times is a very under-utlised aspect of gratitude.

So what does that look like in practice?

Yesterday I was having a difficult moment. It was the end of a long day after many other long days. I am maxing things out at the moment – I have alot on with my family, my business and yoga teacher training.

At the end of a long day yesterday I had a couple of difficult, and unexpected situations to contend with and some decisions had to be made.   I was frankly exhausted – which is not great for me. When I’m tired I’m not at my best. And yesterday was not great. I was questioning things and in a low mood.

So I rang my dear friend Lynne to chat – she is wonderful and listened to me with love – as she always does. Then I asked her about her day. I knew she’d been to the doctor for a check up for heart during the day.  And the fantastic thing was the news was really good. He’s really pleased with her progress and felt she was in a great place with her health.

And in that moment everything shifted – I was so happy that she had had a great report. The gratitude that I felt at that news was a like a bright shaft of sunlight slicing through a very cloudy storm. It took the focus completely away from my situation and energised me and lifted me up for the rest of the evening.

The deeper learning for me here is that the shift came from my gratitude at hearing Lynne’s news – not from my download about my day. I rarely do the “download thing” anymore because I strongly believe repeating my negative story to anyone does not serve me. It can just perpetuate things. What I realise now was that I was inspired to call so I could hear her good news – which would spark my gratitude. What a shift!

So a gratitude attitude can be as simple as that – all I needed to do was to look around and find something to be grateful for. Often I can do it for myself but in that moment it came from my inspiration to call Lynne.  I’m so glad I did.

The other point here is that I didn’t need to find  something in my life to be grateful for –  I found gratitude for something else going on for someone else.

So next time you’re feeling a little low try this on this aspect of gratitude. Look around for what there is to be grateful for. It really does work.

How to Create A Daily Ritual to Build Your Gratitude Attitude

So if a gratitude attitude is a master frequency how do we create a daily ritual to build a strong gratitude attitude muscle?  What are the practical things we can do daily to help ground some of this into our lives?

Understanding the power of a gratitude attitude is truly the first step. As I said earlier this is not positive thinking. It is a much deeper and more devoted practice.

Here are four steps to help you create a devoted daily gratitude attitude ritual:

  1. Meditate on what you are grateful for. If you would like to access my gratitude attitude meditation and worksheet email me at hello@jenramsey.com.
  2. Write a list, using a pen and paper, of 50 things you are grateful for right now –  not something you want in the future.
  3. Build a daily gratitude practice – listing 10 things you are grateful for every day for the next 90 days.
  4. Witness every day how these feelings of gratitude open up new and positive thoughts about yourself and your life. Add these to your daily practice list or journal on these things more deeply.
